Guide
Understanding Business Broadband
Contended vs. uncontended connections
Standard business broadband is contended, meaning the connection is shared with other users in your area — the advertised speed is an “up to” figure, and real-world speed can dip at peak times. A leased line is uncontended and dedicated entirely to your business, so the speed you’re sold is the speed you get, at any time of day.
Service level agreements and fix times
A standard broadband contract is usually sold on a best-efforts basis, with no contractual guarantee on fix time if it goes down. Leased lines come with a service level agreement (SLA) specifying a guaranteed response and repair time, often with financial compensation if the provider misses it. If downtime would cost your business real money, the SLA is often worth more than a marginally cheaper price.
Installation timelines
Switching between providers on the same existing infrastructure typically takes two to four weeks. A new standard fibre installation is usually four to eight weeks. Leased lines take considerably longer — often 30 to 90 working days — because they frequently require new civil works to bring a dedicated line to your premises. If you have a hard deadline (an office move, a contract renewal), starting early matters more for broadband than almost any other utility.
How much speed you actually need
Basic email, web browsing and card payments need relatively little bandwidth. Video conferencing, cloud backups, VoIP phone systems and hosting your own servers need considerably more — and upload speed, which is often overlooked, tends to matter more than download speed for these use cases. Sizing your connection to how the business actually works, rather than buying the fastest available package, is usually the better way to control cost.
