Guide

Understanding Business Insurance

Which covers are legally required?

Employers’ liability insurance is a legal requirement for almost any UK business with staff, and you can be fined for each day you operate without it. Public liability is not a legal requirement but is expected by most landlords, clients and contracts, and covers claims from members of the public injured or whose property is damaged because of your business. Professional indemnity is typically required by regulators or clients in advice-giving professions, but is not a general legal requirement.

How cover limits are set

Public and employers’ liability policies are sold with a limit per claim — commonly £1 million, £2 million, £5 million or £10 million. The right limit depends on your contracts (many commercial clients specify a minimum limit before they will engage you) and the realistic worst-case cost of a claim in your sector. Buying a limit far above what your contracts require or your risk profile justifies is one of the most common ways businesses overpay.

What affects your premium

Insurers price on your trade classification, claims history, turnover, number of employees, and the cover limits and excess you choose. A clean claims history and an accurate trade description usually bring the premium down; under-declaring turnover or activities can lead to a claim being reduced or refused later, so accuracy at quote stage matters more than a lower number.

When to review your policy

Most business insurance runs on a 12-month term with automatic renewal unless you cancel. Renewal is the natural point to re-benchmark, but it is also worth reviewing mid-term if your turnover, headcount, premises or activities have changed significantly, since an outdated policy can leave you under-insured exactly when you need it most.
